Beck students exemplify interpersonal skills with Amazing Shake Challenge
This year, Beck Elementary School adopted an important initiative to coincide with the school’s “True Blue” character practices by placing an additional emphasis on honing students’ interpersonal skills. After a year of habitually practicing these skills, Beck students had the opportunity to demonstrate their progress at the school’s Amazing Shake Challenge.
Peterson students learn traditional Philippine folk dance
A cultural dance has inspired students to jump to new learning opportunities.
As part of Peterson Elementary’s jump-roping unit, the school introduced a dance called “tinikling” to the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance that involves two parts: clickers and jumpers. Clickers move the sticks to a beat and are in sync with the other clickers. Jumpers dance through the sticks in various patterns.
Berkshire Elementary supports bears at Wild Animal Sanctuary in Boyd
Berkshire Elementary School students recently had the exciting opportunity to support the Wild Animal Sanctuary-Texas in Boyd with a campus service project. Each class adopted a bear to support from the sanctuary and worked on a fun surprise for their animal.
Granger fourth grader crowned Miss West Texas Fair & Rodeo Jr. Miss 2021
After much hard work and determination, Granger Elementary fourth-grader Hayden Slagle has earned the title of Miss West Texas Fair & Rodeo Jr. Miss, becoming the inaugural recipient of the honor.
NISD elementary students go the distance in running clubs
Second- through fifth-grade students at Haslet Elementary School are striving to run the cumulative equivalent of a marathon in the Haslet Elementary Marathon Running Club.
The Marathon Running Club takes place every Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. The club will continue through Dec. 8, culminating with students running in the NISD Reindeer Romp. At their first club on Sept. 15, over 170 students participated and worked toward their 26.2-mile goal.
Berkshire Elementary mascot named by students
There’s a new bear in town, and his name is Boomer. Students at Berkshire Elementary had the exciting opportunity to voice their ideas and vote to find the perfect name for their new mascot.
Middle and Elementary School students collaborate on STEM project
Students at Prairie View Elementary and Chisholm Trail Middle School had the unique opportunity to collaborate on a STEM robotics project.
Chisholm students in seventh- and eighth-grade robotics classes are learning about gear mechanisms, torque speed relationships and the engineering design process. At the same time, third-grade students at Prairie View are learning about push and pull energy. Teachers at the neighboring schools decided to combine the groups for a shared learning experience.
Curtis students get creative for pumpkin decorating contest
Students at Lizzie Curtis Elementary pushed their creativity to the limits for their school’s pumpkin decorating contest.
The theme of the contest was “My Favorite Storybook Character.” Students decorated pumpkins at home as their favorite storybook character and brought them to the library to be displayed. Throughout the school week, classrooms visited the library to cast their votes for the best pumpkin.
Schluter Elementary celebrates Carl E. Schluter Day
Every year, students and staff at Schluter Elementary are excited to celebrate Carl E. Schluter Day to honor their school’s namesake.
Throughout the day, students can participate in learning experiences based on the passions and interests of Mr. Schluter. For example, there is a presentation on dairy cows and a petting zoo inspired by the fact that Mr. Schluter had animals on his farm. Mark Schluter, NISD school board member and Carl Schluter’s son, even comes out to take students on “Farmer Mark’s Hayride.”
